Top 10 Best Hoverboards & Self Balancing Scooters

All this talk of hoverboards had me wondering, “Are we living in Back to the Future?”

Sadly, the recent technological innovation popularly referred to as a hoverboard does not float on the air. Still, these devices are actually pretty cool.

Self-balancing scooters, or hoverboards, were developed in China in 2013 and 2014. They quickly caught on in the United States, and continue to gain popularity as the technology continues to develop.

Because the technology is so new, advances and developments are constantly being made, and there is a great deal of progress constantly being made in the technology of these scooters. The quality of individual hoverboards also varies greatly from one model to another.

Hoverboards are not legal everywhere, however. Although few states have any formal laws on the books against them, they are illegal in New York, as they are considered to disrupt traffic. Before you buy a hoverboard, you should check that there are no ordinances or local laws restricting their use.

Things to Consider

Before you go out and buy a hoverboard, whether for yourself or a friend, make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into. Here are several important things to keep in mind when shopping for a self-balancing scooter.

1. Price

For many consumers, the price is often a secondary concern. Price and quality are often very closely related, but in the case of hoverboards, it’s especially important to keep the price in mind. This technology is still very new, and many companies are manufacturing inexpensive boards that may not actually work very well. Be wary, as a cheap hoverboard may turn out to be a waste of money entirely.

2. Wheels

Good, sturdy wheels and tires are one of the most important features to look for in a self-balancing scooter. Like any motorized vehicle that relies on wheels, having sturdy wheels and comfy tires with a lot of treads goes a long way to ensuring a smooth and safe ride.

3. Battery

Some early hoverboards were known for occasionally catching on fire and exploding. A lot of power runs through the batteries in order to make the scooter go, and if the battery isn’t well-designed, it can’t release enough heat, and it can explode. Ensure any self-balancing scooter you buy has a battery strong enough to handle what you can throw at it. Each of the scooters we reviewed meets UL 2272 certification for safety.

4. Motors

Just like a car, a good motor is essential for a good hoverboard. The more power the motor can generate the better, as you’ll be able to go faster and cover a greater range of terrain. Just make sure your battery is capable of handling the load.

5. Warranty

Since this is such recent innovation, make sure that your product is covered by a warranty. That way, any manufacturing errors or defects will be provided for. If a hoverboard you’re interested in doesn’t back their product with a warranty, you may want to think twice.

10. SWAGTRON T5

SWAGTRON TThe SWAGTRON T5 is an affordable, entry-level hoverboard designed primarily to introduce preteens and young teenagers to the world of self-balancing scooters, allowing them to learn the ropes of controlling the best hoverboard without spending a pretty penny on a more expensive model.

One of the things that stand out with this model is its learning mode. This setting limits the speed at which the board can move, which makes it suitable for younger people who haven’t learned to use it well enough, making the inevitable falls less painful. Of course, it also has a standard mode so you can get all the thrills of the board once you get the hang of it.

The board can reach a speed of 7 mph at its standard speed. It’s also lightweight. It weighs less than 20 pounds, so smaller kids shouldn’t have too much trouble carrying it short distances if they get tired of riding. The hoverboard has a clean, sleek white chassis, but that does mean you’ll need to wipe it down regularly, as dust and particles will show.

  • Learning mode restricts speed for new learners
  • Can support up to 187-pound rider
  • Lightweight design

9. Razor Hovertracks 2.0

Razor HovertracksRazor is a well-respected manufacturer of electric devices, and they have turned their talents to an affordable and versatile hoverboard with the Hovertracks 2.0. The Hovertracks is fairly fast and can reach speeds of 8 miles an hour, roughly equivalent to a comfortable cruise on a bicycle.

The board is powered by a silent-running 350W motor and can run continuously for up to an hour. Its lithium-ion battery is designed to be exchanged easily, so can simply swap out one battery for another and keep your ride going. It’s also designed with a stabilizer that helps you maintain your balance.

Like the SWAGTRON T5, the Hovertracks has a learning mode that limits the max speed for new riders. Other useful features include a LED battery monitor and an LED light bar display that helps keep you visible even in the dark. This isn’t the fastest hoverboard, and you can’t really go off-road with it, but it’s a great value for the price.

  • Learning mode restricts speed for new learners
  • Can support up to 220-pound rider
  • LED light bar provides nighttime visibility

8. SWAGTRON T1

Best SWAGTRON TThe T1 is a step up from the budget-friendly T5, but it’s still relatively affordable. The motor is upgraded to a 250W model, providing more power and speed. The T1 is designed to cruise at 8 miles per hour and has a range of 11 miles, providing nearly an hour and a half of battery life.

A variety of features set the T1 apart from the T5. In addition to its improved speed, it features LED headlights and a battery indicator, allowing you to drive safely in the dark and keep tabs on your battery, so you don’t end up stuck ten miles from home. Another awesome feature is its safe stop technology that helps you slow down safely if your battery loses power, preventing an uncomfortable crash.

The T1 is designed with gear stabilization that provides better support when headed downhill or turning in general. The superior control allows for a smoother, more exciting ride. Like the other best hoverboards, it too comes with a learning mode.

  • Learning mode restricts speed for new learners
  • Can support up to 220-pound rider
  • LED headlights for safe nighttime travel

7. Skque X1

Skque XThe Skque X1 hoverboard stands out from the other scooters I’ve reviewed so far in one key way: it features a Bluetooth speaker that connects up to your iPod, MP3 player or smartphone, allowing you to cruise down the street with your tunes blaring just like a car. It was a feature I genuinely enjoyed.

In every other way, the X1 is a typical hoverboard. Dual 350W motors propel the X1 to speeds of around 7 miles an hour. The battery here is better than some of the other models, though, as it has a range of up to 12 miles, providing almost two hours of battery life. LED lights keep you safe while travelling at night, and an improved motherboard allows for superior handling.

This is the best hoverboard I’ve reviewed up to now. It isn’t quite as fast as some of the others, but an improved range coupled with Bluetooth speakers give it an edge over the competition.

  • Bluetooth speakers allow you to enjoy your music as you ride
  • Can support up to 264-pound rider
  • LED headlights for safe nighttime travel

6. HOVERZON Electric Self-balancing Hoverboard

HOVERZON Electric Self-balancing HoverboardI heard a lot of good things about HOVERZON, so I was excited to try this one out. It’s quite comparable to the X1. It has a similar 12-mile range and can go just a mite faster, clocking out at 8 miles per hour. Like most of these boards, it comes with a practice mode for the uninitiated. It also has Bluetooth speakers for audiophiles. However, it can’t support as much weight as the X1, and it doesn’t have any headlights.

It’s got the same balance control as other best hoverboards, but I don’t think it handled quite as well as some of them. Still, it rides well, and I didn’t have any problems. The Hoverzon is a good board, but it doesn’t really do anything the Skque X1 did for less money. You probably won’t regret your purchase, but I’d recommend the X1 over this board.

  • Bluetooth speakers allow you to enjoy your music as you ride
  • Learning mode restricts speed for new learners
  • Can support up to 220-pound rider

5. EPIKGO Classic Series Self-balancing Scooters

EPIKGO Classic Series Self-balancing ScootersNow we’re talking business. EPIKGO knows how to make an awesome hoverboard. The quality of the ride was way better than any of the previous boards, and the construction of this board is top-notch.

The first thing I noticed were the wheels. These wheels stand out from most hoverboards. They look more like car tires. They’re much smaller, of course – only 8.5 inches – but they’re tough. These are all-terrain tires that let you take your hoverboard places most self-balancing scooters just can’t handle.

Two 400 W motors combine for 800 watts of power, allowing you to climb a slope of up to 18 degrees. The board can reach speeds of at least 10 miles an hour, but possibly more – I didn’t really want to push it. One thing I did notice is that its battery doesn’t last as long as some other models, but considering the increased power of the motors, I’m not really surprised. It does come with bright LED headlights, but it lacks the Bluetooth speakers of some other models. Still, this is a beast board, maybe even a bit more than I’m ready for.

  • All-terrain tires allow you to cover more terrain
  • Can support up to 265-pound rider
  • LED headlights for safe nighttime travel

4. EPIKGO SPORT Balance Board

EPIKGO SPORT Balance BoardBeyond the obvious cosmetic differences of the tires, there’s not a lot of difference between theEPIKGO Sport and classic series. Racing tires are used in place of all-terrain tires, but the rest is more or less the same.

It has two 400W motors and can cruise for about an hour at 10 miles an hour. This actually limits its range over some of the other Hoverboards, but I think it makes up for it with speed. The racing wheels might work to enhance its speed; I’m not sure. But they do give it better grip and traction on the road.

This board has headlights and is designed to charge fully within 2 hours, utilizing special charging technology. One thing I definitely noticed is that it’s really heavy – 40 pounds! Definitely not suited for children.

  • Racing tires offer better grip and handling
  • Can support up to 265-pound rider
  • LED headlights for safe nighttime travel

3. Segway miniPRO

Segway miniPROIn a way, it was the Segway that started the hoverboard craze. Indeed, the hoverboard is really a modified design on the Segway that removes the handle, transferring the steering and maneuvering of the board entirely to the feet. Of course, there were some hurdles to overcome in that transition.

The Segway miniPRO isn’t a hoverboard, but it is the original self-balancing scooter. As such, Segway has a stronger handle on how to design a board. Nowhere does this shine better than in its mobile app control. Providing you with vehicle diagnostics, allowing you to set your speed and even turn on your Anti-theft alarm, the mobile app is awesome. And that Anti-theft alarm is also very handy. The miniPRO isn’t cheap, and I like the security alarm provides.

My biggest beef with the machine is its speed limit. The onboard computer automatically brakes if you attempt to accelerate past 10 miles per hour, which is seriously disconcerting. The motor is definitely capable of offering better speeds, but Segway’s desire for safety limits the fun to be had a little. Still, this is a fun ride, especially when listening to a particular Weird Al song.

  • Mobile app offers a variety of useful functionality
  • Speeds of up to 10 mph
  • Can support up to 220-pound rider

2. Official Halo Rover Hoverboard

Official Halo Rover HoverboardNow the Halo Rover I like. It features 8.5-inch all-terrain tires similar to the Classic EPIKGO, but I think these tires have a bit better tread on them. Unlike the EPIKGO, this model is outfitted with Bluetooth speakers, which go a long way towards improving my experience.

All of the best hoverboards and scooters I’ve reviewed till now have only had one or two modes. This one has a third mode – Advanced – which steps up the game. It also ups the EPIKGO in another department. This board can handle inclines up to 20 degrees, which makes it even better for off-roading. Like the EPIKGO, it can reach speeds of 10 miles an hour, but its range is limited to an hour battery life, so don’t get too carried away.

Perhaps the best thing I can say about this board is that it is supported by a US-based company, rather than one out of China. This means that the quality and customer service support – including a mobile app – are top-notch. This board might cost more than the EPIKGO, but it’s worth every penny.

  • Mobile app offers a variety of useful functionality
  • All-terrain tires allow you to cover more terrain
  • Bluetooth speakers allow you to enjoy your music as you ride
  • Can support up to 265-pound rider
  • LED headlights for safe nighttime travel

Best Hoverboards & Self Balancing Scooters Under $800

1. EPIKGO Premier Series

EPIKGO Premier SeriesThis is a really good hoverboard. That said, I’m not sure it’s good enough to justify its price. It’s definitely a capable and powerful board, but it doesn’t really do anything others do for less money.

It’s outfitted with the same 8.5-inch tires of the other EPIKGO models. It has two 400W motors, can climb to 18-degree slopes and can reach speeds of 10 miles an hour. It has a range of 12 miles, which is as good as any board I’ve tested. It has the requisite headlights and even Bluetooth speakers.

So why am I hesitant to fully recommend this scooter? Well, it’s not really any better than the Halo Rover. Yes, it has better range, but is an extra two-mile radius really worth $200? I’m not convinced. Go with this model if you absolutely have to have the best. Most people, however, won’t need the minor improvements this model offers over similar models.

  • All-terrain tires allow you to cover more terrain
  • Can support up to 265-pound rider
  • LED headlights for safe nighttime travel

Conclusion

I didn’t know much about hoverboards going in, but now I can handle them like a pro – well, almost. Don’t let your inexperience stop you or your family from getting in on the fun. There’s a lot of excitement to be had here. Whether you like what the EPIKGO has to offer, want a cheaper board to learn on, or are ready to go all-in, we wish you the best for your shopping experience.
